About the art

Here’s a story about a chalk art piece called "Sunset Sail,” that I created with my friend, Kathryn. We decided to participate in the chalk art contest at our local Dragon on the Lake Festival. We thought it would be a cool opportunity to showcase our artistic skills. The contest gave us a specific space on the street to work with, measuring five foot by five foot. We were free to draw whatever we wanted within that square. After brainstorming ideas, Kathryn and I decided to create a silhouette of a sailboat against a beautiful sunset backdrop. We were inspired by the nearby lake and found some stunning sunset pictures and sailboat images online to use as references. The contest had a time limit, and we only had two days to complete our piece. Unfortunately, a rainstorm washed away our progress on the first day, so we had to start all over again. It was definitely a challenge, but we were determined to finish in time. We decided to go with a silhouette design because it allowed us to recreate the artwork quickly without getting caught up in intricate details. Working together with Kathryn was a collaborative process. We started by creating a light outline of our design and then worked on different parts individually. We would consult each other on color choices and ask for opinions to ensure that the artwork blended seamlessly. It was a bit tricky at times, trying to work around each other, but the outline helped us differentiate our areas of focus. Our goal with "Sunset Sail" was to create a beautiful scenery that would captivate viewers. We didn't have a specific story in mind, but we wanted to evoke a sense of peace and serenity. We wanted people to look at our artwork and feel a sense of calmness and beauty. I'm really proud of the final result, and so is my dad. He mentioned in a 4ever11 podcast how our piece stood out amidst the other, intense and edgy dragon-themed artworks at the festival. The colors of the water and the silhouette of the sailboat created a serene atmosphere. It was amazing to see how our artwork provided a contrast and brought a sense of tranquility to the festival. Overall, participating in the chalk art contest was an incredible experience. It challenged us creatively and allowed us to showcase our artistic abilities. I'm grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Kathryn and create something beautiful together. Art has the power to evoke emotions and create a connection with people, and I'm glad we were able to achieve that with "Sunset Sail."
